Most incense on a Canadian shelf is the same product with a different label: a bamboo stick coated in charcoal, dipped in fragrance oil, sealed with binders nobody publishes. The smoke is the charcoal burning — not the scent.
The exception is Japanese incense. Specifically, Shoyeido — a Kyoto house that has been blending incense since 1705, twelve generations of the Hata family, still making it the same way. They build sticks without a charcoal core and publish every ingredient on the pack. That is the entire catalog you are looking at.

Twelve generations in one city.
The Hata family started blending incense in Kyoto in 1705. The same recipes, refined across three centuries, are still being mixed at the Nagaoka-kyō facility today by the twelfth-generation house. Shoyeido brought Japanese incense to the West in 1894 — this is the oldest continuously operating incense house most Canadians have never heard of. Most incense brands — including most of what you find at the grocery store or on Amazon — do not disclose what binds the stick or what produces the scent. Shoyeido publishes the full ingredient list per blend: sandalwood, cinnamon, cassia, benzoin, clove, patchouli, the resin or wood specific to that recipe. We stock them for that reason. Same standard we apply to everything else we sell. No charcoal stick at the core.
The campfire smell of cheap incense comes from the charcoal stick burning underneath the fragrance. Shoyeido sticks are self-combusting compositions of wood, resin, and aromatic ingredients — no bamboo core, no charcoal layer. The smoke is lower, the scent is what you actually smell, and the burn is consistent across the pack. Standard sticks burn 20-30 minutes. Shoyeido sticks burn 20-30 minutes depending on the blend — standard Daily-line sticks are about 25 minutes, premium reserve blends like Eternal Treasure run longer. Cones (Floral World line: jasmine, rose, pine, lavender) burn 15-25 minutes with a more concentrated scent throw than sticks. Yes — for fire safety and to catch ash. Sticks need a flat or boat-style holder with a small hole near one end (Shoyeido makes several ceramic options in our holder collection). Cones sit directly on a heatproof dish; the ceramic stick holders work for cones too. Backflow cones (where the smoke flows downward over a sculpted ceramic piece) need a dedicated backflow burner — we carry these. Burn in a well-ventilated room and never leave it unattended. Birds are particularly sensitive to any smoke — keep them in a separate room. Cats and dogs in the same room are usually fine if the space is ventilated. Shoyeido sticks are charcoal-free (no bamboo-and-charcoal core), so the visible smoke output is much lower than mass-market incense — useful if anyone in the home has asthma. Sticks are the everyday format. Even, slow scent release over 20-30 minutes. Easy to portion: snap one in half for a shorter burn. Best for daily diffusion, reading, sleep wind-down. Cones are concentrated. Faster burn (15-25 min), heavier scent in a smaller space, more visible smoke even from Shoyeido. Best for short rituals, larger rooms, or when you want a single strong scent moment rather than a gentle background. The Shoyeido Floral World line is cone-only (jasmine, rose, pine, lavender).Les bâtons sont le format quotidien. Diffusion régulière et lente sur 20-30 minutes. How should I store incense to keep it fresh?Comment conserver l'encens pour qu'il reste frais?
Keep sealed in the original tube or an airtight tin, away from sunlight and humidity. Properly stored, Shoyeido sticks hold their scent for 2-5 years — the premium reserve blends (Eternal Treasure, Great Origin) age the best. If a pack loses its scent, the aromatic oils have oxidized; the stick will still burn but the aroma will be flat. Do not store in a bathroom — humidity is the main enemy.Gardez scellé dans le tube d'origine ou dans une boîte hermétique, à l'abri du soleil et de l'humidité.
