Eco Shampoo

Wavy hair that never liked sulfate shampoo — it always left it dry and frizzy. This cleans my scalp without that stripped feeling, and my curls actually behave. Less foam took one wash to get used to.

Colour-treated hair. My old shampoo faded it fast. Switched to this and the colour holds noticeably longer between salon visits. Scalp feels clean, not tight.

Eco Shampoo

Sensitive scalp, no reaction at all — that alone sold me. I do miss a scent, so I added their eucalyptus oil. Wish it lathered a bit more out of the bottle, but the hair result is there.

Eco Shampoo

Read the ingredient list and recognized everything — no SLS, no silicone, no parabens. Fine hair stays light instead of getting that coated, heavy buildup feeling by day three.

What "clean hair" feels like when the detergent is too aggressive

The squeaky-clean feeling is your hair shaft being stripped, not cleaned.

Most drugstore shampoo is built on sodium lauryl sulfate — the same petroleum surfactant dermatologists use as the irritant baseline in clinical patch testing. It over-cleans: it lifts sebum and product residue, then keeps going and strips natural protein from the shaft. Silicone is added back to mask the result.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate — the surfactant most drugstore shampoos are built on — is the dermatology gold-standard irritant control in skin patch testing, used on 43,000+ patients over 20+ years (European Society of Contact Dermatitis baseline series)

Phthalates hide in personal-care products under the single word "fragrance" — no regulation requires them to be disclosed by name (Health Canada)

Roughly 60% of the surfactants produced globally each year end up in aquatic environments — and they are toxic to aquatic life (Arora et al. 2022, J. Applied Microbiology 133(3):1229–1244, DOI 10.1111/jam.15631)

Built by Engineers. Not Marketers. Conçu par des ingénieurs. Pas des marketeurs.

We Spent 30+ Years Cleaning Up Contamination. Then We Checked Under the Sink.

Diana Trasente and Angelo Diadelfo are environmental engineers with Master's degrees and over 30 years remediating contaminated soil and water across Canada. They know industrial chemicals intimately — PCBs, heavy metals, synthetic surfactants, petroleum solvents.

Then they started reading the labels on their own household cleaners. The same classes of synthetic chemicals they spent their careers cleaning up were sitting in their kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.

In 2010, they founded Sampson Eco Shop — applying the same scientific rigor to household cleaners that they applied to environmental remediation. Every product starts with one question: What's actually in here, and is it safe to put down a drain?

“Every cleaner we make starts with the same question we'd ask on a contamination site: what's actually in here, and what happens when it goes down the drain?” “Chaque nettoyant qu'on fabrique commence par la même question qu'on poserait sur un site contaminé: qu'est-ce qu'il y a vraiment dedans, et qu'est-ce qui se passe quand ça va dans le drain?”

The Method

Powered by Coconuts. Engineered by Engineers.

A gentle plant-based surfactant system, paired and balanced by Diana and Angelo Diadelfo, M.Eng. — environmental engineers since 2010.

1

Wet and open the cuticle

Warm water and the gentle surfactant wet the hair and scalp evenly so cleaning happens at the roots, where buildup actually sits — not by scouring the length.

2

Lift sebum and product residue

Sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate lifts oil, sweat, and styling-product residue off the scalp — a gentler, sulfate-free-leaning surfactant that cleans without the harsh detergency of SLS.

3

Strengthen, do not strip

Hydrolyzed wheat protein, glycerin, aloe, and cactus oil stay on the shaft as the surfactant clears the scalp — so cleaning does not cost the hair its natural protein.

4

Rinse clean, no film

Guar conditioning rinses with the lather and leaves no silicone film to build up. Hair is clean and conditioned, not coated — and the surfactant breaks down in wastewater per OECD 301D.

Format Matters

Read the shampoo aisle by the chemistry, not the claims

Three shampoos side by side on the choices that decide whether your hair gets clean or just stripped.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Foam, gentleness, colour-treated hair, and what is actually in the bottle.

Because the base is sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, a gentle sulfate-free-leaning surfactant — not SLS. Big foam comes from harsh sulfate detergency, and foam is not what cleans your scalp. Less lather here is the formula working as designed, not a performance deficit. The hair comes out clean.
Yes. It is built to remove real buildup — sebum, styling-product residue, hard-water minerals — at the scalp, which is where the shampoo job actually is. Gentle refers to the surfactant being kinder to the hair shaft and skin, not to weaker cleaning. On heavy buildup days, a short second wash clears it.
It is one of the reasons buyers switch to it. SLS detergency is aggressive on colour; a gentler, sulfate-free-leaning surfactant with no silicone film tends to be easier on colour-treated and chemically processed hair. As with any new product, watch your own results over the first few washes.
Silicones give a smooth feel by depositing a film on the hair. That film builds up over time, weighs hair down, and eventually needs a clarifying wash to remove. This formula conditions with guar and glycerin instead, so there is no film to build up and nothing to clarify away.
Yes — Sampson sells 20+ natural essential-oil fragrances separately. Add a few drops if you want a scent. It ships unscented so people with sensitive scalps or fragrance sensitivities can use it as-is, with no synthetic fragrance carriers, phthalates, or parabens.
It contains hydrolyzed wheat protein, used to strengthen the hair shaft. It is a topical hair ingredient, not food. If you have a known severe wheat or gluten allergy with topical reactivity, read the full ingredient list and decide what fits you, or patch-test first.
It is formulated as a gentle daily shampoo, which is part of the point — a sulfate-free-leaning surfactant is easier on the scalp and shaft for frequent washing than harsh SLS detergency. How often you wash is a personal choice based on your hair type and scalp.
