Eco Laundry Detergent

Old top-loader with an agitator and a busy house. This is the first plant-based detergent that actually sudses up and cleans like my machine expects. Whites stayed white through a winter of hockey gear.

Eco Laundry Detergent

Switched the whole house off mainstream detergent. Read the ingredient list and recognized everything — they even tell you straight that the LAS is petroleum-based. That honesty is why I trust the rest.

My son's eczema flared with our old detergent. Unscented, no brighteners, no quats. A few loads in and his skin settled. I add a couple drops of lavender oil to the sheets and that's it.

Eco Laundry Detergent

Cleans well and I like the standard formula for my agitator washer. Took me a couple loads to realize I only needed the HE one for the front-loader downstairs — would help if the bottle label made the standard-vs-HE choice clearer up front.

Why most "eco" laundry detergent isn't

The phosphate cap was 5%. Now it's 0.5%. The rest of the formula didn't change.

Canadian regulation reduced phosphate content in laundry detergent in 2010. The petroleum surfactants, the "fragrance" loophole that hides phthalates, and the residue that runs into your local watershed weren't part of that rule.

Indoor VOC concentrations run 2–5× higher than outdoor — up to 10× during and after cleaning (EPA TEAM Study)

Phthalate metabolites are detectable in nearly all people tested in national biomonitoring — and synthetic "fragrance" in cleaning products is a recognized exposure route that needs no ingredient disclosure (CDC NHANES)

About 60% of the surfactants produced globally each year end up in aquatic environments — half of all consumption is household use (Arora 2022 (Wiley))

We Spent 30+ Years Cleaning Up Contamination. Then We Checked Under the Sink.

Diana Trasente and Angelo Diadelfo are environmental engineers with Master's degrees and over 30 years remediating contaminated soil and water across Canada. They know industrial chemicals intimately — PCBs, heavy metals, synthetic surfactants, petroleum solvents.

Then they started reading the labels on their own household cleaners. The same classes of synthetic chemicals they spent their careers cleaning up were sitting in their kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.

In 2010, they founded Sampson Eco Shop — applying the same scientific rigor to household cleaners that they applied to environmental remediation. Every product starts with one question: What's actually in here, and is it safe to put down a drain?

“Every cleaner we make starts with the same question we'd ask on a contamination site: what's actually in here, and what happens when it goes down the drain?” “Chaque nettoyant qu'on fabrique commence par la même question qu'on poserait sur un site contaminé: qu'est-ce qu'il y a vraiment dedans, et qu'est-ce qui se passe quand ça va dans le drain?”

The Method

How a standard-machine detergent cleans without phosphates or quats

Four steps from a hard-water wash to a clean rinse that breaks down in treatment — built for agitators and top-loaders.

1

Soften the water, prime the load

Sodium carbonate and sodium citrate bind hard-water minerals and bring the wash water to working pH, so the surfactants spend their cleaning power on the laundry instead of fighting the water itself — less detergent, same clean.

2

Wetting and soil release

The surfactant blend — LAS, the Laureth-9 nonionic, and coconut-derived SLES — drops water's surface tension so it penetrates the fibre and pulls dirt off, not just over the surface.

3

Suspend the soil, full-suds for agitators

Cocamidopropyl betaine stabilizes a fuller foam suited to top-loading agitator and standard machines, holding lifted dirt in suspension so it rinses out instead of redepositing on fabric. (For low-suds HE front-loaders, the HE variant is the right tool.)

4

Rinse out, then break down

The surfactants flush from the load and break down in wastewater treatment to OECD 301D instead of building up in your watershed. No phosphates, no quats, no optical brighteners left behind on the fabric or in the water.

Format Matters

Read the formula, not the marketing

What separates this standard detergent from conventional and "eco"-labelled options — on the chemistry that ends up in your clothes and your watershed.

Sampson Eco Laundry DetergentConventional drugstore detergent"Eco" / greenwashed detergent
Machine fitStandard / agitator top-loaders (HE-compatible); HE variant for front-loadersUsually one formula, suds not matched to machineRarely specifies standard vs HE
Phosphates0% (sodium citrate instead)≤0.5% (regulatory cap)Usually phosphate-free, rarely disclosed clearly
Quats (quaternary ammonium compounds)None — Quats-FreeFrequently used as antimicrobial / anti-static / softeningOften present, rarely disclosed
VOC contentNone — water-based, no solvent carrierHigh (chemistry-dependent)Often undisclosed

The format is the difference. Same plant chemistry, same engineering rigor — without the bottle, the water weight, or the synthetic add-ons.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard vs HE, hard water, sensitive skin, and what's actually in the bottle.

This is the standard-machine detergent — built for top-loading agitator washers and conventional top-loaders, where a fuller suds profile is normal. It's HE-compatible if you prefer, but it isn't optimized for the low-suds chamber of a high-efficiency front-loader. The Eco Laundry Detergent HE variant runs a low-suds chemistry made specifically for HE front-loaders and HE top-loaders. If your machine has the HE symbol and you want suds matched to it, choose the HE variant.
It's formulated to keep whites white, colours bright, and pull dirt out of fibre using a surfactant blend paired with sodium citrate as a chelating agent for hard water. Tested on standard household soils — stains, dirt, and food residue — at conventional-detergent strength.
Standard top-loader dose per the bottle. Adjust up for large or heavily soiled loads, down for small or lightly soiled ones. The plant-surfactant base means a smaller amount works further than buyers used to commercial detergent expect.
It's formulated without phosphates, VOCs, synthetic fragrance carriers, optical brighteners, and quaternary ammonium compounds. Many buyers report skin-sensitivity improvement after switching. We don't make blanket "safe for babies" claims — the full ingredient list is on the bottle so you can read it and decide what fits your household.
Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats / QACs) are antimicrobial and anti-static agents commonly used in mainstream laundry products and fabric softeners. They're linked to respiratory irritation and are a known asthma trigger in occupational studies. This detergent is formulated without them.
Honest answer: Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonic Acid (LAS) is petroleum-feedstock, not coconut-derived — so we don't call the whole formula "coconut-derived." It's a workhorse anionic surfactant included for cleaning performance, and it meets OECD 301D ready-biodegradability. The SLES and cocamidopropyl betaine in the blend are the coconut-derived components. The full list is on the label so you can see exactly what's in it.
Yes. Biodegradable to OECD 301D, phosphate-free, and free of quaternary ammonium compounds. The surfactants break down in standard wastewater treatment.
It ships unscented — no synthetic fragrance carriers, no phthalates, no parabens — so sensitive households can use it as-is. Add a scent from 20+ natural essential-oil fragrances sold separately if you want one. Formulated and bottled in Montreal by Diana and Angelo Diadelfo (both M.Eng. Environmental), used by 20,000+ Canadian households since 2010.
