Eco Fabric Softener

Three ingredients and my towels still come out soft. After years of softeners that perfumed the whole laundry room, this one just does the job and disappears. No headache from the smell.

Eco Fabric Softener

My daughter has eczema and most softeners flare her up. Unscented was the deciding factor — no reaction, and the static on her fleece is gone. We add a couple drops of the lavender oil for our own loads.

Works well and I like the short ingredient list. Softening is good on clothes and sheets — a touch lighter on heavy towels than my old brand, but I expected that going unscented. Happy to keep it out of the watershed.

Front-loader HE, no issues. The static cling on synthetics is what sold me — winter laundry used to crackle, now it doesn't. Clean ingredient list I can actually read, made in Montreal. Switched the whole house over.

What's actually doing the softening in most bottles

Conventional fabric softener leaves more behind than softness.

Most drugstore softeners carry a heavy synthetic-fragrance load, dyes, and a long list of additives — and that fragrance is applied to fabric that sits against your skin all day and gets warmed in the dryer. Sampson Eco Fabric Softener is three named ingredients: water, one plant-derived softening active, and a preservative. No phosphates, no VOCs, no phthalate-carrier fragrance.

Phthalate metabolites are detectable in nearly all people tested in national biomonitoring — and synthetic "fragrance" in laundry and cleaning products is a recognized exposure route that needs no ingredient disclosure (CDC NHANES)

Phthalates hide in laundry-product ingredient lists under "fragrance" — no regulation requires their disclosure (Health Canada)

Canada legislated a 0.5% phosphate cap in cleaning products in 2010 — Sampson rules them out entirely, at zero (Canada.ca)

We Spent 30+ Years Cleaning Up Contamination. Then We Checked Under the Sink. Nous avons passé 30+ ans à décontaminer des sites. Puis nous avons regardé sous l'évier.

Diana Trasente and Angelo Diadelfo are environmental engineers with Master's degrees and over 30 years remediating contaminated soil and water across Canada. They know industrial chemicals intimately — PCBs, heavy metals, synthetic surfactants, petroleum solvents. Diana Trasente et Angelo Diadelfo sont des ingénieurs en environnement avec des maîtrises et plus de 30 ans d'expérience en décontamination de sols et d'eau au Canada.

Then they started reading the labels on their own household cleaners. The same classes of synthetic chemicals they spent their careers cleaning up were sitting in their kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room. Puis ils ont commencé à lire les étiquettes des nettoyants ménagers chez eux. Les mêmes classes de produits chimiques qu'ils passaient leur carrière à nettoyer se trouvaient dans leur cuisine, salle de bain et buanderie.

In 2010, they founded Sampson Eco Shop — applying the same scientific rigor to household cleaners that they applied to environmental remediation. Every product starts with one question: What's actually in here, and is it safe to put down a drain?

The Method

How three ingredients make fabric soft

A plant-derived active deposits on clean fibres during the rinse and reduces the friction that makes fabric feel rough and build static.

1

Released during the rinse

The dispenser holds the softener back until the rinse cycle, so the plant-derived active meets clean fibres after the detergent has been flushed away.

2

Deposits onto the fibres

The softening active is attracted to fabric and lays down a thin, even layer across the surface of each fibre — the layer that does the softening.

3

Reduces friction and static

That layer lets fibres slide past one another instead of catching — so fabric feels softer to the hand and synthetics build up far less static charge as they tumble dry.

4

Breaks down downstream

What rinses away is water-based and biodegradable to OECD 301D — it breaks down in standard waste-water treatment rather than persisting in the watershed.

Format Matters

What's in the bottle, line by line

The same softening job, with a short water-based formula instead of dyes, heavy fragrance, and phosphates.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Static, towels, HE machines, dosing, and what's actually on the label.

Because softening fabric needs one active, water to carry it, and a preservative to keep the bottle stable. The plant-derived softening active deposits on the fibres and reduces friction; everything else in a conventional softener — dyes, opacifiers, thickeners, heavy fragrance — is cosmetic or shelf-appeal, not function.
Yes. The softening active coats the fibres so they slide past each other instead of catching — that is what produces softness to the hand and lower static charge on synthetics coming out of the dryer. It works in the rinse cycle the same way conventional softeners do.
Yes — it works in both standard top-loaders and high-efficiency front-loaders. Pour it into the fabric-softener dispenser up to the machine's fill line and run your normal cycle.
So households with fragrance sensitivities, eczema, or asthma can use it without a synthetic-fragrance trigger — and so you control the scent. Sampson sells 20+ natural essential-oil fragrances separately; add a few drops if you want a scent, or use it as-is.
Yes, in standard household use. It is biodegradable to OECD 301D and phosphate-free, so it breaks down in standard waste-water and septic conditions rather than persisting.
Yes, in moderation. Any fabric softener leaves a thin film that can reduce towel absorbency over time, so use a smaller dose on towels and skip dryer sheets with them. For everyday clothing and sheets, dose to the fill line as normal.
Yes. Sampson products are formulated and made in Montreal by Diana and Angelo Diadelfo, both M.Eng. Environmental, and have been in Canadian homes since 2010 — now used by 20,000+ Canadian households.
Fill the machine's softener dispenser to its marked line for a standard load — about a capful for most machines. Use less for small loads and for towels. Adding more does not soften more; it just leaves extra film.
