My daughter has eczema and most softeners flare her up. Unscented was the deciding factor — no reaction, and the static on her fleece is gone. We add a couple drops of the lavender oil for our own loads.

What's actually doing the softening in most bottles
Conventional fabric softener leaves more behind than softness.
Most drugstore softeners carry a heavy synthetic-fragrance load, dyes, and a long list of additives — and that fragrance is applied to fabric that sits against your skin all day and gets warmed in the dryer. Sampson Eco Fabric Softener is three named ingredients: water, one plant-derived softening active, and a preservative. No phosphates, no VOCs, no phthalate-carrier fragrance.

The Method
How three ingredients make fabric soft
A plant-derived active deposits on clean fibres during the rinse and reduces the friction that makes fabric feel rough and build static.
Released during the rinse
The dispenser holds the softener back until the rinse cycle, so the plant-derived active meets clean fibres after the detergent has been flushed away.
Deposits onto the fibres
The softening active is attracted to fabric and lays down a thin, even layer across the surface of each fibre — the layer that does the softening.
Reduces friction and static
That layer lets fibres slide past one another instead of catching — so fabric feels softer to the hand and synthetics build up far less static charge as they tumble dry.
Breaks down downstream
What rinses away is water-based and biodegradable to OECD 301D — it breaks down in standard waste-water treatment rather than persisting in the watershed.
