Eco Bathroom Cleaner

Our shower glass had a hard-water film I could never get off with my old bleach spray. Sprayed this, waited a minute, wiped — the glass is actually clear again. And no fumes in a closed bathroom, which is the part I didn't know I was missing.

Eco Bathroom Cleaner

Hard-water town. Calcium build-up on the faucets and around the drain was a constant fight. This is the first cleaner that actually dissolves it instead of just smearing it around. Repeat application on the worst spots and it's gone.

I switched the whole bathroom over to Sampson. Six ingredients I can read, no perfume headache, and it ships unscented so I add the eucalyptus oil myself. Soap scum on the tub wipes off easily now.

Eco Bathroom Cleaner

Works well on tile, the tub, and the toilet. One note: it's acid-based so I had to be careful around the marble vanity top — a quick read of the label would have saved me a spot-test. On everything else it does the job without the bleach smell.

What you're spraying in a small, closed room at close range

Soap scum is a mineral problem. Bleach was never the right tool for it.

Conventional bathroom cleaners are built on bleach or ammonia and a fragrance blend to mask both — sprayed at close range in the smallest, least-ventilated room in the house. But soap scum and hard-water build-up are fatty-and-mineral deposits, not germs; the chemistry that dissolves them is acid. Sampson Eco Bathroom Cleaner is six named ingredients built around citric and lactic acid.

Indoor VOC levels are 2–5× higher than outdoor — up to 10× during cleaning, concentrated in small, poorly ventilated rooms like bathrooms (EPA TEAM)

Phthalates hide under the single word "fragrance" — no disclosure is required, and nearly 100% of people tested carry detectable phthalate levels (CDC NHANES)

Spray cleaning products can be 63–99% VOC by weight — what doesn't land on the surface evaporates into the breathing zone (Aerosol & Air Quality Research)

We Spent 30+ Years Cleaning Up Contamination. Then We Checked Under the Sink.

Diana Trasente and Angelo Diadelfo are environmental engineers with Master's degrees and over 30 years remediating contaminated soil and water across Canada. They know industrial chemicals intimately — PCBs, heavy metals, synthetic surfactants, petroleum solvents.

Then they started reading the labels on their own household cleaners. The same classes of synthetic chemicals they spent their careers cleaning up were sitting in their kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.

In 2010, they founded Sampson Eco Shop — applying the same scientific rigor to household cleaners that they applied to environmental remediation. Every product starts with one question: What's actually in here, and is it safe to put down a drain?

“Every cleaner we make starts with the same question we'd ask on a contamination site: what's actually in here, and what happens when it goes down the drain?” “Chaque nettoyant qu'on fabrique commence par la même question qu'on poserait sur un site contaminé: qu'est-ce qu'il y a vraiment dedans, et qu'est-ce qui se passe quand ça va dans le drain?”

The Method

Powered by Acid Chemistry. Engineered by Engineers.

Citric and lactic acid, paired and balanced by Diana and Angelo Diadelfo, M.Eng. — environmental engineers since 2010.

1

Acid dissolves the mineral build-up

Citric and lactic acid react with the calcium and mineral deposits left by hard water, breaking down the scale that holds soap scum to shower glass, tile, and fixtures.

2

Chelation keeps the acid working

Sodium citrate binds the hard-water ions in your tap water so the acids aren't spent neutralizing the water itself — they stay available to dissolve the build-up on the surface.

3

Surfactant lifts the loosened scum

The plant-derived glucoside surfactant and lauramine oxide break the surface tension on the loosened fatty residue, lifting soap scum, mildew film, and rust marks off the surface so they wipe away.

4

Wipe, rinse, break down

Wipe the surface and rinse anything porous or skin-contacting. The surfactants and acids are water-based and biodegradable to OECD 301D — they break down in wastewater treatment instead of persisting in the watershed.

Format Matters

Three bathroom cleaners, three very different labels

What "bathroom cleaner" actually means depends entirely on the chemistry behind it. Here is the comparison, ingredient by ingredient.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on what this acid-based formula dissolves, what it doesn't do, and how to use it safely.

Yes — that is exactly what it is built for. Citric and lactic acid dissolve the mineral and fatty-residue layer that forms soap scum and calcium build-up, while sodium citrate keeps the acid from being neutralized by your tap water. Give it 30 to 60 seconds of dwell time on the surface, then wipe. Repeat on heavy build-up rather than scrubbing harder.
No. This is a cleaner, not a DIN-registered disinfectant, so we make no germ-kill claims. It dissolves and lifts soap scum, mineral build-up, mildew film, and rust. If a surface needs disinfecting, clean with this first to remove the residue, then follow with a registered disinfectant.
Showers and shower glass, bathtubs, toilet bowls, sinks, faucets and chrome fixtures, and tile and grout. Because it is acid-based, avoid natural stone like marble, travertine, and unsealed limestone — acids etch those surfaces. Spot-test any specialty or polished finish first.
It is water-based with no bleach, no ammonia, no VOCs, and no synthetic fragrance carriers — six named ingredients on the label. We don't make blanket "safe for kids and pets" claims; read the ingredient list and decide what fits your household. As with any acid cleaner, rinse skin-contact surfaces and keep it off natural stone.
Because they are the wrong chemistry for the job and they carry a real respiratory profile in a small, closed room. Soap scum and hard-water build-up are mineral-and-fatty deposits — they dissolve with acid, not with an oxidizer like bleach or an alkali like ammonia. Acid does the actual descaling; bleach and ammonia mostly add fumes and a fragrance load to cover them.
Yes — Sampson sells 20+ natural essential-oil fragrances separately. It ships unscented on purpose: no synthetic fragrance carriers, no phthalates, no parabens, so households with sensitivities can use it as-is. Add a few drops of an essential-oil fragrance if you want a scent.
Yes. It is biodegradable to OECD 301D, phosphate-free, with no bleach, no ammonia, and no quaternary ammonium compounds — the surfactants and acids break down in wastewater treatment rather than persisting in the watershed.
Yes. It is formulated and bottled in Montreal by Diana and Angelo Diadelfo, environmental engineers (M.Eng.) who have built Sampson's eco-cleaning line since 2010. It is used by more than 20,000 Canadian households.
