Eco Laundry Detergent HE

Front-loader with a baby in cloth diapers and a dog. Three brands of 'eco' detergent didn't get diaper smell out. This did. The bottle is also enormous and lasts.

Eco Laundry Detergent HE

Was using a mainstream HE detergent marketed for sensitive skin. Switched to this. Cleaner-smelling laundry, no fabric softener needed. Skin stopped reacting.

Eco Laundry Detergent HE

Front-loader, hard water household. Took a few loads to find the right dose — more concentrated than my old detergent. Once dialed in, using less per load than expected. Adding lavender oil to kids' sheets is a bonus I wasn't planning on.

Why most "eco" laundry detergent isn't

The phosphate cap was 5%. Now it's 0.5%. The rest of the formula didn't change.

Canadian regulation reduced phosphate content in laundry detergent in 2010. The petroleum surfactants, the "fragrance" loophole that hides phthalates, and the residue that runs into your local watershed weren't part of that rule. Sampson Eco Laundry Detergent HE was formulated by environmental engineers who spent 25 years cleaning up what mainstream detergents leave behind.

2–5× higher VOC concentration indoors than outdoors during cleaning (EPA TEAM Study)

10–44% higher phthalate levels in urine among weekly cleaning-product users during pregnancy (EWG / peer-reviewed)

~60% of household surfactants end up in aquatic environments globally (Arora 2022)

We Spent 30+ Years Cleaning Up Contamination. Then We Checked Under the Sink.

Diana Trasente and Angelo Diadelfo are environmental engineers with Master's degrees and over 30 years remediating contaminated soil and water across Canada. They know industrial chemicals intimately — PCBs, heavy metals, synthetic surfactants, petroleum solvents.

Then they started reading the labels on their own household cleaners. The same classes of synthetic chemicals they spent their careers cleaning up were sitting in their kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.

In 2010, they founded Sampson Eco Shop — applying the same scientific rigor to household cleaners that they applied to environmental remediation. Every product starts with one question: What's actually in here, and is it safe to put down a drain?

“Every cleaner we make starts with the same question we'd ask on a contamination site: what's actually in here, and what happens when it goes down the drain?” “Chaque nettoyant qu'on fabrique commence par la même question qu'on poserait sur un site contaminé: qu'est-ce qu'il y a vraiment dedans, et qu'est-ce qui se passe quand ça va dans le drain?”

The Method

How Sampson Eco Laundry HE Actually Cleans.

Four steps. No phosphates. No quats. No phthalate-carrier fragrance. Built for high-efficiency front-loaders and HE top-loaders.

1

Step 1 — Soften the water, prime the load

Binds hard-water minerals and brings the wash water to working pH so surfactants don't waste their cleaning power on the water itself — less detergent, same clean.

2

Step 2 — Wetting + soil release

Drops water's surface tension so the detergent penetrates the fibre and pulls dirt off, not just over the surface.

3

Step 3 — Soil suspension + HE-compatible foam

Holds lifted dirt in suspension so it rinses out instead of redepositing on fabric. Foam stays low-suds for front-loaders.

4

Step 4 — Rinse-out, then break-down

Surfactants flush from the load and break down in wastewater treatment instead of building up in your watershed.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know before switching laundry detergent.

Yes. Eco Laundry Detergent HE is a low-suds formula designed for high-efficiency front-loaders and HE top-loaders.
It's formulated to keep whites white, colours bright, and pull dirt out of fibre using plant-derived surfactants paired with sodium citrate as a chelating agent for hard water. Tested on standard household soils — stains, dirt, food residue.
HE-dose per the bottle. Adjust for load size and soil level. The plant-surfactant base means a smaller amount works further than buyers used to commercial detergent expect.
Formulated without phosphates, VOCs, synthetic fragrance carriers, and the petroleum surfactants associated with skin reactivity. Many buyers report skin-sensitivity improvement after switching. We don't make blanket "safe for babies" claims — read the ingredient list and decide.
Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats / QACs) are antimicrobial and anti-static agents commonly used in mainstream laundry products and fabric softeners. They're linked to respiratory irritation and are a known asthma trigger in occupational studies. Sampson Eco Laundry HE is formulated without them.
Yes. Plant-derived, OECD 301D biodegradable, no phosphates.
Ships unscented — no synthetic fragrance carriers, no phthalates, no parabens. Synthetic carriers in commercial detergents commonly hide phthalates (endocrine disruptors not required to be listed by name) — we don't use them. Buyers choose their own scent from 20+ natural essential-oil fragrances available separately.
Yes. Formulated and bottled in Montreal. Used by 20,000+ Canadian families since 2010.
