The short answer from the cooktop makers: let the glass cool, wipe it with a mild detergent and a soft cloth, and use a cooktop cleaner and a razor scraper held at about 45 degrees for burnt-on food. GE Appliances, EuroKera and KitchenAid all steer you away from abrasives, and GE adds that sugary spills need attention while they are still hot.
We sell the Eco All Purpose Spray, so read the product notes with that in mind. It is not a cooktop cleaner, and where a point comes from our product page rather than a maker, the guide says so. Our grout guide follows the same source-first approach.
EuroKera, which makes glass-ceramic cooktop glass, says to clean when the surface is completely cool, using diluted dishwashing liquid, a soft sponge or cloth, and a dry cloth to buff.
For heavy burnt-on residue, GE says to apply cooktop cleaner, rub with a cleaning pad, then hold a razor scraper at roughly a 45 degree angle and keep some cream on the residue.
GE says sugary spills and melted plastic can pit the glass unless removed while hot, and that pitting is not covered by the warranty. Remove the pan first and wear an oven mitt.
KitchenAid says not to use steel wool, abrasive powder cleansers, chlorine bleach, rust remover or ammonia on a glass cooktop, because these products could damage the surface.
What Should You Know Before You Clean a Glass Stove Top?
Check your owner's manual first, because the maker's list of what to avoid is the one that counts. GE Appliances says that sponges or cleaners other than those it recommends can damage the cooktop.
- Wait for it to cool: EuroKera says to clean when the surface is completely cool, and to remove pots, pans and utensils before you start. Sugar, syrup, tomato products and milk are the exception.
- Lift, do not slide: Both GE and EuroKera say to lift pans rather than slide them. GE says sliding leaves metal marks, and nicks or rough spots on a pan base will scratch the glass.
- Keep pan bases clean and dry: EuroKera says the bottom of the pan should be clean and dry before cooking.
- Know your surface: These sources cover electric glass-ceramic cooktops. KitchenAid keeps a separate induction guide, so check your manual if you have induction.
How Do You Clean a Glass Stove Top Every Day?
Spray a mild detergent solution, wipe with a soft cloth, then buff dry. EuroKera describes this as the daily routine, and GE adds that cleaning residue should be removed before the cooktop is heated again.
- Let the cooktop cool. EuroKera says to allow it to cool completely before cleaning.
- Spray a mild solution. EuroKera says to dilute a mild detergent, such as dishwashing liquid, with water and spray it across the surface.
- Wipe with a soft sponge or damp cloth. EuroKera says to use a soft, clean sponge or damp cloth.
- Buff dry. EuroKera says a soft, dry cloth brings back the polished look. KitchenAid suggests a microfibre cloth to help prevent streaks.
- Remove all residue. GE says to wipe off cleaner residue and not to heat the cooktop until it has been cleaned off. KitchenAid says to wipe away any cleaner or soap with a damp cloth.
How Do You Remove Burnt-On Food From a Glass Stove Top?
Use a cooktop cleaner and a pad first, then a razor scraper for what is left. GE gives the full sequence for burned-on residue, and the other two sources agree on the scraper angle.
- Let it cool. GE says to allow the cooktop to cool, then spread a few drops of cooktop cleaner over the burned-on area.
- Rub with a cleaning pad. GE says to rub the area with the cleaning pad, applying pressure as needed. KitchenAid says to use a non-abrasive pad and to avoid scouring pads and scrub brushes.
- Scrape at about 45 degrees. GE, EuroKera and KitchenAid all give 45 degrees. EuroKera says the single-edge blade should be clean and new, and GE says not to use a dull or nicked blade.
- Keep a little cleaner on the residue. GE says to keep a small amount of cream on the residue as you scrape, then use the scrub sponge on what remains.
- Rinse the cleaner off. Wipe away the residue before using the burners again, as GE advises.

Deal with them while the glass is still hot, which is the opposite of the usual advice. GE says sugary spills such as jelly, fudge, candy and syrup, or melted plastic, can pit the surface unless removed hot.
- What GE says to do: Turn off all burners and remove the hot pans. Wearing an oven mitt, use a new, sharp single-edge razor scraper to move the spill to a cool area of the cooktop, then wipe it up with paper towels.
- What EuroKera adds: It lists sugar, tomato sauce, syrups, milk, melted plastic and kitchen foil as the spills to remove straight away, scraping at 45 degrees while the surface is warm.
- Why it matters: GE says that once pitting or an indentation has formed, the cooktop glass has to be replaced, and that pitting is not covered by the warranty.
- Hardened plastic or porcelain: GE says melted plastic or porcelain from a teapot that hardens on the glass usually cannot be removed because it bonds to the glass.
Can You Use Vinegar or Baking Soda on a Glass Stove Top?
Diluted vinegar is mentioned by two makers for specific jobs, but powders are the warning. KitchenAid says to spritz the cooled surface with vinegar diluted with water, or your cleaning solution, and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Vinegar for water spots: EuroKera says white vinegar removes water spots from a clean, cool cooktop. This differs from cement grout, where acids do damage.
- White or metallic marks: GE says a metallic sheen is caused by mineral deposits from evaporated water and food, and that its cooktop cleaner removes them.
- Gritty powders: KitchenAid says not to use abrasive powder cleansers. It does not name baking soda in the guide we read, so check your manual before trying any gritty paste.
- Products to avoid: KitchenAid also lists chlorine bleach, ammonia and rust remover as products to avoid on a glass cooktop.
Can You Use Eco All Purpose Spray on a Glass Stove Top?
Possibly for a light daily wipe, but the maker's cleaner is the safer route. Our product page does not mention cooktops, and we have not tested it on one.
- What the page lists: Water, sodium carbonate, a chelating agent, sodium hydroxide and surfactants, plus a preservative. Chlorine bleach and ammonia are not on the ingredient list. It is sold unscented.
- Stated surfaces: The page names plastics, ceramics, painted walls, sealed countertops, glass and stainless, and says a microfibre cloth gives the cleanest finish on glass.
- The GE caution: GE says cleaners other than those it recommends can result in damage. If your cooktop is under warranty, the maker's recommended cleaner is the lower-risk choice.
- If you try it: Test a small corner on a cool cooktop, wipe it off completely, and buff dry, since GE says residue must be gone before you heat the glass.
Why Does My Glass Stove Top Have Marks and Scratches?
Most marks come from pans, minerals or residue, and GE explains each one. Some are removable and some are not.
- Metal marks: GE says sliding pots and pans leaves metal markings, which are usually removable with cooktop cleaner, a pad or a razor scraper.
- Black discolouration: GE says pots with a thin aluminum or copper overlay that boil dry can leave a black mark that should be removed immediately, or it may become permanent.
- Colour changes in the speckles: GE says this is pan residue gathering in the rough pattern of the glass, mostly from soft metal pans like copper or aluminum.
- Scratches from pans: GE says to check pan bottoms for nicks, gouges and rough areas, because they scratch the cooktop.
