Aleppo soap has a long reputation as an antiseptic soap, and its laurel berry oil gets most of the credit. So the question is fair: is Aleppo soap actually antibacterial, or is that just a story that travelled well?
Here is the short version before the detail. Laurel oil does show activity against some bacteria in the lab, but every study we found tested the isolated oil, not a finished bar of soap, and no study we could find has tested Aleppo soap itself. It is a simple olive-oil cleansing soap. It is not a disinfectant.

What Does "Antibacterial" Mean for a Soap?
In consumer soap, "antibacterial" traditionally meant a product was formulated with an added antimicrobial ingredient, such as triclosan or triclocarban, on top of the cleansing soap itself. Regular soap cleans by lifting dirt and germs off skin so water can rinse them away, which is why the CDC still calls washing with soap and water the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. Aleppo soap contains no added antimicrobial. Its ingredients are saponified olive oil, saponified laurel berry oil, water and lye, so the antiseptic reputation rests on the laurel oil.
Does Laurel Oil Show Antibacterial Activity in the Lab?
Yes, in isolated form and in a dish, laurel oil shows some activity, but the picture is more modest than the reputation suggests. In Fidan et al. (2019, Molecules), researchers distilled laurel essential oil from fruits, twigs and leaves and tested each against nine microorganisms using an agar well method. Leaf oil was the most active. The fruit oil, the part closest to the berry oil in Aleppo soap, produced a 12.9 mm zone against Staphylococcus aureus and showed no activity against E. coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Zones are measured including the 8 mm well, and by the paper's own scale readings up to 15 mm count as "poorly sensitive".
Two limits matter here. The study used a volatile essential oil, while the laurel berry oil used in soap is a heavier fatty oil, which is a different material. And it was an in vitro test, with no data on skin or on soap.

We could not find a published study that measured the antibacterial effect of a finished Aleppo soap bar. That leaves a real gap: we cannot tell you how much of any lab activity survives saponification, months of curing, and dilution in lather and rinse water. Is Antibacterial Soap Better Than Plain Soap?
Not according to the FDA. Its consumer guidance states there is not sufficient evidence that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps protect against illness better than washing with plain soap and water, and its 2016 final rule ended the marketing of 19 antibacterial ingredients, including triclosan and triclocarban, in nonprescription consumer wash products.
