Eco Window Cleaner

Two ingredients. After 15 years of buying glass cleaner with an INCI list longer than a bread label, this is the obvious answer. Mirrors and stovetop are spotless, no chemical smell.

I have asthma. Conventional glass cleaner has been a trigger for years — I'd hold my breath while spraying mirrors. This one I can use without a single reaction.

Works as advertised. Wish it was sold in a refillable concentrate format — going through the 1L quickly on big windows. The 3.6L helps.

Glass stovetop, mirrors, the toaster oven door, the patio doors — same bottle, no streaks anywhere. The smell is just clean — actually clean, not perfumed clean.

What you're spraying into the air you breathe at face height

Glass cleaner is the wrong place to learn what "ammonia exposure" feels like.

Conventional glass cleaners are ammonia-based and applied as a fine spray — at face height on mirrors, onto stovetop glass that heats the fumes, inside bathrooms with the door closed. Sampson Eco Window Cleaner is two ingredients: water and one plant-derived surfactant. No ammonia, no phthalate-carrier fragrance, no VOCs.

Ammonia is listed by Health Canada as a respiratory irritant — airway inflammation rises with chronic low-level exposure (Health Canada)

Indoor VOC levels are 2–5× higher than outdoor — up to 10× during cleaning (EPA TEAM)

Conventional glass-cleaner SDS sheets list 6–12 components plus an undisclosed "fragrance" blend that can hide phthalates (Industry SDS review)

We Spent 30+ Years Cleaning Up Contamination. Then We Checked Under the Sink.

Diana Trasente and Angelo Diadelfo are environmental engineers with Master's degrees and over 30 years remediating contaminated soil and water across Canada. They know industrial chemicals intimately — PCBs, heavy metals, synthetic surfactants, petroleum solvents.

Then they started reading the labels on their own household cleaners. The same classes of synthetic chemicals they spent their careers cleaning up were sitting in their kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room.

In 2010, they founded Sampson Eco Shop — applying the same scientific rigor to household cleaners that they applied to environmental remediation. Every product starts with one question: What's actually in here, and is it safe to put down a drain?

“Every cleaner we make starts with the same question we'd ask on a contamination site: what's actually in here, and what happens when it goes down the drain?” “Chaque nettoyant qu'on fabrique commence par la même question qu'on poserait sur un site contaminé: qu'est-ce qu'il y a vraiment dedans, et qu'est-ce qui se passe quand ça va dans le drain?”

The Method

How Sampson Eco Window Cleaner Cleans With Two Ingredients.

Four steps. Water and one plant-derived surfactant. No ammonia, no VOCs, no phthalate-carrier fragrance. Streak-free on cold glass.

1

Break the surface tension of the oily film

The plant-derived glycoside surfactant breaks the surface tension of the oily film that holds fingerprints, kitchen splatter, and water-spot residue to the glass.

2

Lift, suspend, carry away

Water carries the lifted soil away from the surface — no propylene glycol carrier, no isopropanol, no ammonia. Glycoside and water doing what they evolved to do.

3

Evaporate without a film

Both ingredients evaporate. No soap-film residue, no surfactant haze, no streak-forming carrier — the streak problem on glass is solved by removing what causes it.

4

Wipe and walk away

Microfibre cloth or squeegee finishes the job. No rinse, no second pass. Avoid hot glass in direct sun — the water evaporates before you wipe and leaves a faint mineral mark.

Format Matters

How Eco Window Cleaner Compares to What's On The Shelf

Glass cleaner is the simplest job in the cleaning aisle — water and a surfactant solve it. Everything else on the label is doing something other than cleaning glass.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you want to know before switching glass cleaner.

Because that's all the job needs. The plant glycoside surfactant breaks surface tension on the oily film that holds fingerprints and dust to glass; water lifts it off and evaporates. No ammonia carrier, no propylene glycol, no soap-film residue. Most conventional glass cleaners use 6–12 components because they're solving secondary problems — fragrance stability, surfactant solubility, viscosity — created by their own formulation choices.
Yes — no ammonia, no abrasive solvent, no acid. The glycoside surfactant is non-aggressive on coatings. As with any cleaner, spot-test in a corner first if you have a specialty film or aftermarket tint.
Yes — all glass surfaces, plus stainless and chrome bathroom fixtures. Especially recommended for glass stove tops, where ammonia-based cleaners flash off into kitchen air the moment the cooktop is warm.
Not in normal conditions. Streak problems on glass come from soap-film residue (none here), excess product (use a light coat), or evaporation before wiping (avoid hot glass in direct sun). Microfibre cloth or squeegee gives the cleanest finish.
Yes. OECD 301D biodegradable, phosphate-free, no ammonia, no quaternary ammonium compounds.
Water-based, no ammonia, no VOCs, no synthetic fragrance carriers. Two named ingredients on the label — read them and decide what fits your household.
Yes — Sampson sells 20+ natural essential-oil fragrances separately. Add a few drops if you want a scent. Ships unscented so households with sensitivities can use as-is.
Car windshields and side windows — yes. Eyeglass lenses have anti-reflective and oleophobic coatings that vary by manufacturer; we recommend the cleaner specified by your optician for those.
